A derivative is a financial instrument that its value is dependent upon or is derived from the price of an underlying asset or benchmark.

The most common derivatives include swaps, futures, forwards and options. Many speculators and hedgers would trade them on exchange or over-the-counter as an alternative to an underlying asset or hedging their risk on a position in the underlying asset.
